My BFX wish list!

How about a two window managers, GNOME as it was and fluxbox, because complete fluxbox is just 4MB, so BFX .ISO image wont grow too much... also I would like to see "no GUI" install option, to install just a BFX command-line system (no GNOME, Firefox, etc.)...i'm happy with this distro but it could be better with this options.

Re: My BFX wish list!

Don't get me wrong, I love Fluxbox and use it as my main DE on my laptop, together with PCManFM... nothing can beat those apps' tabbed functionality, in my view... But what characterizes BeaFanatIX is the fact that it's a very lightweight GNOME+Metacity distro, with all the advantages of having a GNOME desktop but in a lightweight fashion. As you said, Fluxbox is very easily installable, it's available in Breezy's repos... I'd rather have BeaFanatIX keep its direction, than starting to "fork" its way out of the starting idea.

Your suggestions are easily accomplished with either a Ubuntu server install (which gives you a command-line system, or by looking at other really good distros out there, like Damn Small Linux (which you can then convert to a full debian install), or even FeatherLinux which unfortunately seems to be discontinued (but with which you can start and go from there).

I really wouldn't like to see BFX lose its focus, it fits a niche right now and can only grow better. Now, what I would like to see from the next BFX release? An upgrade to Dapper's repos. Just imagine... BFX LTS! It would be a great marketing move, too. There's nothing quite BFX out there right now, and I know a lightweight, well integrated GNOME desktop must be on demand.

(BTW, my first post here, even though I've been a Bea user since the good ol' Warty Beatrix days! Keep up the brilliant work, guys wink)

Re: My BFX wish list!

O.K. maybe its bad idea to add another windows manager, but wouldn't be great to have no gui install option... Ubuntu is o.k. but server (or command-line) ubuntu have 350MB on hard drive. BFX without gui shouldn't be larger than 150MB and should be much faster than ubuntu!

No it shouldn't, for BFX has a desktop optimized kernel. In the team we talk about a commandline version, to give the user a "bare bone" (NeatBFX) to build a customized desktop and/or build a server. However, those kind of people are not our general "customers", and there's one vital aspect: Time!
Such a sub-project is intriguing, but I can't do both. Maybe some day if I have support...
